Jon Hamm is preparing to become a first-time dad at 55, but a resurfaced 2012 interview reveals he once had serious doubts about fatherhood.
Hamm is expecting his first child with wife, Anna Osceola, 38, marking a major new chapter for the Mad Men star.
Jon Hamm Once Said He’d Be a ‘Terrible Father’
Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt were together for 18 years.
At the time, Hamm was dating actress and filmmaker Jennifer Westfeldt, his longtime partner of 18 years. During an interview with Us Weekly, the actor joked about the idea of having children, saying, “I’d be a terrible father!”
Hamm also admitted he was baffled by how his friends managed to balance parenthood with their careers.
“I see my friends who have children and I’m like, ‘Dude, how are you even upright, much less here at work at 6 a.m.?’” he said.
Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt never had children during their relationship.
That same month, Westfeldt opened up about their decision not to have children during an interview with The New York Times.
“I’ve thought about this a lot lately. I never thought I’d be this age and not have kids,” she admitted at the time. “But my life has also gone in a million ways I never anticipated.”
The Friends With Kids filmmaker, who was 42 at the time, said she and the Fargo star had a “pretty great life together” and that the possibility of regretting their decision was not enough to convince her to have children.
“I may wake up tomorrow with that lightning bolt, and I’ll have to scramble to make it happen,” she added.

The ‘Mad Men’ star is expecting his first child with Anna Osceola
Hamm and Westfeldt ultimately split in 2015 after 18 years together.
His outlook on fatherhood, however, appears to have changed dramatically in the years since.
Hamm met Osceola while filming the final season of Mad Men, and the pair eventually began dating. They tied the knot in June 2023 at the same Big Sur location where they filmed the show’s finale.
Jon Hamm’s perspective on fatherhood has ‘changed a lot,' source revealed.
In 2024, The Morning Show actor acknowledged that he was open to becoming a father, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “I hope it turns into kids.”
“It’s not lost on me that I’m 53. I will be the old dad, but so it goes. It could be a good thing. We’ll see,” he said.
Now, that possibility is becoming a reality.
Jon Hamm Is Now ‘Genuinely Excited’ to Become a Dad
Anna Osceola never pressured Jon Hamm to become a father.
A source recently told Us Weekly that Hamm is in a “completely different place in life now” and that his “perspective has changed a lot” when it comes to having children.
The insider added that Osceola never pressured him into parenthood, explaining that they “got to a place together where they both felt ready to take that next step.”
“They’re both so excited and it really feels like the right time for them,” the source said.
Another source told People that the actor is “genuinely excited to become a dad,” adding, “He’s happy, settled, and ready for this.”
