Jon Stewart thinks President Donald Trump may have accidentally given late night a second life.

Appearing on “IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson,” the Daily Show host discussed Trump’s long-running fury at comedians, arguing that the president’s sensitivity to jokes has made satire feel newly consequential.

“There is nothing more, I think, fragile than someone who wields real power, who feels that that power will be diminished by satire or commentary,” Stewart said.

Jon Stewart called Donald Trump’s reaction to comedy a shocking display of fragility.

“It’s kind of a shocking fragility, for someone who wants to project alpha male dominance and yet be so incredibly wrecked by something that happens at 12:30 at night,” Stewart noted. “I mean, he’s made all of our shows relevant again, in a weird way.”

The comedian said Trump appears to confuse cultural power with actual political power, treating satire as though it operates on the same level as the presidency.

Obama said that understanding culture was central to how she approached public life as first lady.

“When I was first lady, I think our administration understood that,” Obama said. “There was the Washington power, but if you wanted to talk to anybody, if you wanted anybody to hear you, really, you needed to go at it from the culture, where people are, and not try to buck it.”

Michelle Obama explained why she used platforms such as ‘The Daily Show’ to connect with audiences.

Obama pointed to The Daily Show as exactly the kind of platform that let politicians and public figures reach audiences in a less formal setting.

“I mean, I didn’t do one interview with Face the Nation or Meet the Press,” she said. “I never sat down with the New York Times editorial board, but I came on The Daily Show.”

Still, Stewart admitted he is not entirely sure whether his brand of political comedy has ultimately helped the country.

He called late night “a relic” in a media world now shaped by social platforms and podcasts, and wondered whether satirical shows offer catharsis or merely comfort.

Jon Stewart questioned whether political comedy actually influenced viewers and politics.

Stewart said he sometimes wishes there were a study measuring what his work actually does to viewers and politics.

“Am I hurting? Like, does this help? Does it corrode? Does it pervert?” he wondered. “Is it ultra-processed food that’s given the country a kind of political diabetes? I don’t know.”

The comedian said his work remained driven by an effort to avoid acting in bad faith.

For Stewart, the answer comes down less to certainty than intent.

“It may not be an honorable thing we do, but we do it as honorably as we can,” he said. “It is not in bad faith.”
