Lindsay Clancy Murder Case Declared a Mistrial After Jury Remained Deadlocked, Judge Issues 1-Hour Emergency Stay

Lindsay Clancy's murder case has been declared a mistrial.

Before Judge William Sullivan made the announcement on Friday, September 4, the jury had remained deadlocked on a verdict as to whether Clancy, 36, was criminally responsible for the 2023 deaths of her three young children.

The 11-1 deadlock was revealed earlier this week when the jury’s foreperson informed the judge that one juror refused to follow court instructions about the standard of reasonable doubt. However, the male juror was allowed to stay.

Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, stated he wanted to go to the Massachusetts Supreme Court to reverse "this travesty." At his request, the judge said he would give the defense one hour for an emergency stay from the Supreme Judicial Court.

Clancy’s defense argued she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and was overmedicated when she strangled her and ex-husband Patrick Clancy's children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months — with exercise bands. She killed the kids after sending Patrick out of the house to run errands.

She then jumped off their home in an apparent suicide attempt, which left her paralyzed from the waist down.

Meanwhile, prosecutors argued Lindsay was aware of her actions, alleging she "deliberately and meticulously" murdered her children. In her home state of Massachusetts, the prosecution must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she was able to understand her actions.

The jury had the option of finding her guilty of murder or not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, similar to an insanity defense. If she was found guilty, Lindsay would be sentenced to prison, while the other outcome would result in her continued stay at a mental facility.

As OK! reported, the defense provided medical reports showing Lindsay was prescribed a heavy "cocktail" of up to 13 different psychiatric medications in the four months leading up to the murders. They believe medication led to her alleged altered mental state.

Patrick was aware of what he called his ex-spouse's "big spiral" that occurred when she was prescribed a new medication. He even testified that Lindsay admitted to him she was having "intrusive thoughts" about harming their children and herself.

Lindsay claimed that on the day she committed the murders, she heard a voice that said, "This is your last chance. Kill the children so you can kill yourself."

Patrick said he wasn't worried about the situation because he believed she didn't have "any intention" of actually harming anyone.

The trial began in July.
