Personal injury law has long been as much an advertising business as a legal one. Billboards and daytime TV spots promise fast settlements, and many firms are built to process cases quickly rather than know the people behind them.

Mark Roman took the opposite approach. He initially wanted to be a writer, but after several years in journalism, he wanted a harder problem to solve, and the courtroom offered one. There was analysis, persuasion, and the chance to stand beside someone on one of the worst days of their life. Following a Family Tradition

Roman came to law through family rather than ambition. He grew up hearing his brother and uncle talk through cases at the dinner table, and the profession stuck with him. What he didn’t have when he started was a mentor. So Roman built one out of habit. He sat in courtrooms for hours, watching how other attorneys built and lost arguments, and took notes on what worked.

“Every opportunity to observe became a part of my education,” he says.

The same self-taught streak showed up again when Roman moved from general practice into representing injured clients. Legal knowledge wasn’t enough, so he bought medical textbooks and started reading. Years of that work became the foundation of how the firm still operates today.

Learning Through Experience

Some of that understanding is personal. Roman started working at fourteen, was on his own by nineteen, and has been through several serious car accidents, including one that nearly killed him. He’s had the surgeries, and he knows the waiting rooms.

“Those experiences were both a curse and a blessing,” he says.

It’s part of why the firm never built its name on advertising. Growth came through referrals, from clients who felt heard rather than processed.

Making a Difference

Roman still thinks about one case where this approach paid off. There was a client with unexplained, debilitating symptoms that multiple doctors couldn’t diagnose, some even doubting they were real. Roman kept digging through the medical literature until he found a rare condition that matched the symptoms. He referred the client to one of the few specialists in Florida who treat the condition and watched her recover after a successful procedure.

Roman points to three career markers with particular pride. He earned his Board Certification in Civil Trial Law from The Florida Bar, helped secure a $3 million recovery for a client who was run over by a school bus, and built a firm meant to outlast him. Roman credits his wife of nearly thirty years, Carol-Lynn, who has run the practice’s operations since before the firm had a website.
