One of Princess Diana’s old predictions about the royal family has resurfaced as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle begin a new chapter in the U.K.

Diana famously spoke about her then-husband, King Charles, during her 1995 interview with Martin Bashir. At the time, she questioned whether Charles was truly suited to become monarch, saying she didn’t think he was up to the “top job.”

Princess Diana’s 1995 interview with Martin Bashir resurfaces.

Now, columnist Maureen Callahan believes the late royal’s concerns have taken on new meaning, particularly as the King appears to be making room for his youngest son and his family.

Callahan made the remarks as the Duke and the Duchess of Sussex reportedly returned to Britain with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The couple is expected to settle in the Cotswolds after previously leaving the U.K. and stepping down as working royals in 2020.

The timing has also raised questions about the relationship between Harry and his older brother, William, who has remained deeply hurt by the fallout between the brothers.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return has put Prince William in a difficult position.

According to the author, Charles’ apparent willingness to welcome the couple back could leave the Prince of Wales in an uncomfortable position.

“Why else would he allow William - always the dutiful son, the future King - to be put in such a position? Especially as the 30th anniversary of Diana's death approaches,” Callahan wrote in her Daily Mail opinion piece.

The columnist went on to imagine Harry arguing that William was being “too coldhearted” and “too stubborn” by refusing to fully reconcile with him and Markle.

Maureen Callahan defends Prince William amid ongoing family tensions.

Callahan, however, defended William and suggested that the 44-year-old royal may have his reasons for keeping his distance.

“If anything, it's quite the opposite. William seems to understand what few do or are willing to admit: Some people aren't worthy of forgiveness - especially those who have never asked for it,” she wrote.

“Perhaps William realizes there are some things you can't come back from, that some betrayals are too deep, too profound, to ever recover trust - let alone a modicum of politeness," she continued.

Still, Charles appears to be making an effort to bring his sons closer together.

King Charles reportedly wants Prince Harry and Prince William to reconcile.

The King has reportedly asked one of his closest advisers, Theo Rycroft, to help build a bridge between the brothers, with a source telling the Daily Mail, “A rapprochement between William and Harry remains a work in progress, and Theo is taking the lead.”

Another insider suggested that William could eventually become civil with Harry again, particularly with Rycroft involved in the process.

“The King would love to have Harry around,” a third source told People, adding, “He will want to see his sons together over time. This is the best opportunity we have seen in recent years.”
