Fast forward, and the musical artists got to sing together on the track "Mal de Amores," which was released in early September.
The idea for the empowering bop came to Reyes after "my roomie was going through a heartbreak," she reveals. "I wanted to see her happy, and I was listening and trying to see how I could take her out and have some drinks. I thought, 'How can we talk about this Mal de Amores type of thing where you say, I am not going to suffer because I choose not to suffer.'"
Soon enough, Becky, 24, was on board with the idea. "You could tell how excited she was about the song," the "1, 2, 3" songstress recalls. "She was born in L.A., and I wanted to bring that and the culture, so we decided to speak English and Spanish in the intro because that is also very real. Between her and I, we do speak Spanglish — we mix between both languages. So, we wanted to keep it as real as possible, and it’s been really fun. I feel like after working on this song, our friendship has gotten stronger and stronger."
Being on set with Becky G was a learning experience for Reyes — one that she will never forget. "She is just present, and she is amazing. I really admire her, and it’s an honor for me to get to share this song with her," she says of the "Shower" songstress.
Going forward, the 25-year-old hopes "to make more songs" with Becky G — and is excited to perform "Mal de Amores" live "many, many times."
The cherry on top of the cake is that the reactions to the song have been so moving, and Reyes couldn't be more grateful.
"It feels beautiful. I feel like part of my purpose comes with that," she says. "I feel like I am doing something right, and I have a purpose and it inspires me and motivates me to keep creating music from the heart — from a genuine real place and keep working on myself."
"I have many plans," she reveals. "I am completely grateful that I get to live every day doing what I love — that is priceless. I am very, very blessed, and I am aware of that."
