Interestingly, one of the biggest mysteries surrounding Oreos is its name. Nobody knows what the heck “Oreo” refers to.

Some claim “Oreo” a reference to the Greek word for “mountain,” and others say it may hint at the French word for gold (as the original Oreo container contained gold foil). Many others speculate that “Oreo” is just a great-sounding nonsensical word.

One thing that’s not up for debate is how addictive Oreos are. In fact, recent scientific evidence suggests Oreos trigger similar brain regions as cocaine! So, yeah, good luck with portion control!
