Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’ Fallout — Inside Her Management Feud, Stolen Video Footage Allegations And Other Comeback Scandals!
Feb. 10 2016, Updated 6:05 p.m. ET
Beyoncé once again snatched wigs and wefts around the world on Feb. 6 when she dropped her surprise single "Formation" and an accompanying video for the track! But amid the excitement of Queen Bey’s return to her chart-topping and Twitter-trending glory, the beloved songstress' comeback was marked by a few new scandals.
Ahead of Bey’s big"Formation" reveal, reports broke that she cut ties with the bulk of her management team! According to Page Six, Bey split with her general manager Lee Anne Callahan-Longo, who she worked with for 5 years. It was added that Beyonce replaced Callahan-Longo with Steve Pamon, who was responsible for crafting JPMorgan Chase’s sponsorship of Beyoncé and her husband Jay Z’s successful On the Run tour during the summer of 2014!
“Beyoncé basically cleaned house, got rid of her whole team, which included her cousin, and hired a new team. She wants to surround herself with business people who could take her career to an even higher level,” the source said. “She has one album left to deliver before her deal is up with Columbia, plus she wants to make smarter decisions where it comes to touring, sponsorships and acting roles.”
However, Bey’s rep, Yvette Noel-Schure, insisted that the decision was part of a larger plan for the singer’s entrainment company! “Last year, Parkwood Entertainment created new departments and recruited new executives from the tech, business and entertainment sectors who joined the team to help grow Parkwood and its interests . . . Some senior staffers were given the opportunity to reposition and stay on. Some members . . . awakened to new interests and decided to follow personal routes.” She added, “Lee Anne Callahan-Longo has worked with Beyoncé for the last 10 years. Their friendship supersedes business, and while she is no longer an employee of Parkwood, she will remain an imperative part of Beyoncé’s life.”

The "Formation" video also proved to be a hot topic among the Beyhive and music lovers upon it’s release, with the visual quickly becoming the focus of its own dramatic scandal. Some viewers noted that scenes in the video appeared to be lifted from the the 2013 documentary That B.E.A.T. Bey’s team released a statement to the New York Times, saying that proper legal permission was granted before the shots were used in the clip. "The documentary footage was used with permission and licensed from the owner of the footage. They were given proper compensation. The footage was provided to us by the filmmaker’s production company. The filmmaker is listed in the credits for additional photography direction. We are thankful that they granted us permission,” the statement read.
However, the documentary’s director, Chris Black, said that though Beyoncé's team did attempt to get the rights to use clips from the film in the video, they never reached any form of a deal. And even blasted the singer and "Formation"’s director, Malina Matsoukas, in a series of tweets for using the footage from the film.
That B.E.A.T.’s second director, Abteen Bagheri, also sounded off on the controversy on his Twitter. He did thank Bey and Matsoukas for crediting them for their contributions to the video. However, he also stressed how important That B.E.A.T. is as an individual creative work and not just “b-roll” for a video, with the director emphasizing his point with a screenshot of his quote in a Washington Post story!
But the drama didn’t stop with the "Formation" video! When it came time for Bey’s Super Bowl performance — just one day after the video’s release — the singer was blasted by several viewers watching the show! Some people went as far as to complain that Bey upstaged the Super Bowl’s main halftime act Coldplay!
And Bey’s tour announcement following her performance only added to the issues, with many questioning if they were being set up again like Bey did following her halftime show at Super Bowl 2013! Following that show, she sent people into a frenzy when she announced her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour, which ran through 2014. It seemed that she was teasing a new project when she released her spring and summer tour 2013 tour dates following the halftime show. But Bey actually ended up running through several months of tour stops before finally releasing her new album Beyoncé in December of 2013! And she ended up adding those new songs to her set after going through the majority of her U.S. leg of Mrs. Carter Show dates with only one to two new songs in the show's set!
Tons of her devoted fans were disappointed that they paid to attend her 2013 tour — which featured basically no new music — only for Bey to turn around a year later and perform all the hits from her new album Beyoncé as part of the On the Run tour! And some fans are again wary that Queen Bey may again be selling tickets with no real promise that a new album is anywhere close to being released!
