It's a very special day for Demi Lovato, and she made sure to announce why to her millions of social media followers! The singer, who has been very open about her mental health and addiction issues, revealed she has now been sober for six years.
She admitted that having to be financially responsible for her family when she landed her own show on Disney Channel, as well as a tour with the Jonas brothers, led her down a destructive path. She ended up self medicating with alcohol, cocaine and OxyContin. “I lived fast and I was going to die young,” she said. “I didn’t think I would make it to 21.”
She tweeted on Thursday, “Just officially turned 6 years sober. So grateful for another year of joy, health and happiness. It IS possible."
She then wrote, "I'm so thankful to my family, friends and @castcenters for being a part of this journey. A huge part of my recovery was learning to love myself and to give back to others."

In September of last year, Demi received the Spirit of Sobriety award at the annual Brent Shapiro Foundation for Drug Prevention Summer Spectacular in Beverly Hills, and noted that being sober is not the easiest task.
“Every day is a battle,” she said. “You just have to take it one day at a time, some days are easier than others and some days you forget about drinking and using, but for me, I work on my physical health, which is important, but my mental health as well.”
