The 51-year-old actor is reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film, which Depp said he loves playing. “I have so much fun getting back into his head each time,” he told OK! “He really allows my subversive side to surface. I have to be careful sometimes not to slip into Captain Jack mode when I’m in a silly mood.”

As for his childhood, it was difficult, the actor confirmed. “My mom and dad fought a lot. Sometimes it was really hellish. Music was my way out of misery — my guitar became my best friend. When my band broke up, acting came in and my life went in a different direction,” he said.

But according to Johnny, success in his career has changed him for the better though he insists he is “still shy and very wary of the world.”

“You grow up damaged and broken and then have some success, but you don’t know how to feel good about it,” he said.

“I got lucky,” Depp added. “I straightened myself out and got to lead a good life. It makes you wonder what the hell was the matter with you for so long.”
