Leonardo DiCaprio presented his Django Unchained costar Jamie Foxx with the ultimate award on Sunday, February 23 at the American Black Film Festival in Beverly Hills, California. During his acceptance speech, Jamie emphasized the importance of diversity in Hollywood.
The Titanic star, 45, took the stage in an all-black suit to present the Excellence In The Arts award to Jamie, 52. In addition to that honor, Jamie also won Movie of the Year for his recent film, Just Mercy, which starred Michael B. Jordan.
"You always need black people. You can't slip on your talent and that's why it means so much to get this award," Jamie explained while onstage. "We gotta quit thinking so much about the Oscars and celebrate our own thing, celebrate our own blackness.”
As Jamie delivered his speech, Leonardo smiled from ear-to-ear. Back in 2012, Jamie explained that he admires Leonardo’s dedication to his craft. “He is absolutely his character,” Jamie recalled of Leonardo’s work in Django Unchained during an interview.
“It makes you go back to your hotel room and really get yourself together because you know you have to be tight. I think that it was great for him, because I know he shies away from the commercial films. He doesn't like a commercial film, he wants to be the student," he ended.
The annual event was also attended by Queen & Slim writer, Lena Waithe, who appeared unbothered in an all-purple suit. As OK! readers might recall, Lena, 35, and her wife Alana Mayo called it quits on their relationship two months after tying the knot.
In a statement to Us Weekly, the former couple confirmed their split. “After careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways,” the statement read. “We have nothing but support for one another and ask that you respect our privacy during this time.”
