The Met Gala is one of the biggest nights in fashion, so to stand out, attendees pull out all the stops. But sometimes, it’s not the fashion that takes center stage — it’s the drama!
Who could forget when the Met Gala gave us Hiddleswift in 2016? Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift were filmed having a dance off at the exclusive event, and a summer romance soon blossomed.
Met Gala is probably the most A-list spot, aside from the Oscars, to make a relationship red carpet official, so it only makes sense that’s where George and Amal Clooney made their debut as newlyweds in 2015.
The Met Gala is also where Donald Trump proposed to his wife Melania in 2004. It's fitting that Donald would choose an event as lavish as the Met Gala to ask the now-first lady for her hand in marriage.
Sometimes, the Met Gala causes tensions to flare. At an after party following the 2014 event, Solange Knowles was famously caught on camera hitting Jay Z in an elevator at the Standard Hotel while Beyonce looked on. The fight allegedly occurred after Jay was caught flirting with designer Rachel Roy.
The drama lies in the clothes themselves, too — and sometimes even the accessories. In 2017, Jaden Smith shocked everyone when he brought his own chopped off dreadlocks to the event.

The year before, Kanye West weirded out everyone when he wore icy blue contacts in homage to the them “Manus x Machina.” Some fans found the move problematic, and accused the rapper of seeking to fit in with white beauty standards.
Rihanna made quite the impression at the 2015 Met Gala when she performed her hit “Bitch Better Have My Money” atop a dinner table.
Two years later, Rihanna stole the show again in this Comme des Garçons ensemble that nailed the “Rei Kawkubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” theme.
