Reaching Out! Prince William Ditches Royal Protocol To Hug A Victim Of Deadly London Fire

June 19 2017, Published 4:13 p.m. ET

Prince William couldn’t help but break with royal tradition when meeting victims of London’s deadly Grenfell Tower fire. The future king is supposed to stick to handshakes when interacting with his royal subjects. However, on Friday, Will ditched his family’s royal rules to embrace a victim of last week’s tragic inferno. While speaking to a woman whose husband is reportedly still missing after getting caught in an elevator during the fire, Will hugged the upset Londoner, choosing compassion over protocol. Will visited the Westway Sports Centre with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

According to the Kensington Palace twitter, “the centre has been a focal point for efforts to support those affected by the fire at Grenfell Tower.”

Will and the Queen met with emergency services, thanking them for their hard work during the horrific fire.

The royals also spoke with local residents and community representatives at the centre.

Will and his grandmother aren’t the first London natives to pay a visit to the distressed area. Adele was spotted visiting the area and comforting victims just hours after the fire.
