Prince William is opening up about grief he experienced 21 years after the death of Princess Diana from a tragic car accident that left him without a mother at the young age of 15 years old.
“Twenty-one years ago last month, my mother attended the launch of the Child Bereavement,” he said at an event for the charity on October 15. “Fifteen years later, I was honored to be invited to become Patron of Child Bereavement UK to continue my mother’s commitment to a charity which is very dear to me.”
The Duke of Cambridge then explained how he felt after her heartbreaking death in 1997. “What my mother recognized back then – and what I understand now – is that grief is the most painful experience that any child or parent can endure.”

In honor of his mother, the future King of England is contributing to the charity to help her legacy live on. “But my mother was determined to help those in need and she would have been immensely proud – as I am – of all the Child Bereavement UK has achieved these last 21 years.”
As the father of Prince George and Princess Charlotte, the royal explained how he “appreciates the charity all the more.”
