Jeannie Mai’s road to The Real has been a rocky one. During the May 1 episode, the co-host opened up about her tumultuous career path and revealed she quit her entertainment news contract due to unfair treatment.
“They didn’t want the Jeannie they hired,” the 40-year-old said.
“It’s hard for me to say things without moving my hands or without getting excited or without expression coming out of my face,” she continued. “But immediately things were torn down. They were like ‘Don’t smile so much. Don’t even say “guys.”’"
Jeannie believed her bosses were purposely trying to keep the spotlight on her co-host. “I think they wanted me to let the co-host shine,” she said.

Though the California native said she didn’t think her work drama was enough to “dull her shine,” her friends noticed a change. She recalled them telling her she was “aggravated” all the time.
“When you have a job where you’re forced to be something other than yourself, it will bleed into your personal life,” she told the audience. “I made a big decision and I broke my contract. I actually paid to get out of the contract.”
Though Jeannie didn’t name the company, she’s worked for a list of prominent outlets including Entertainment Tonight, The Insider, Extra, and E!
