Jeannie Mai has something to say to the haters who warned her boyfriend Jeezy not to catch the coronavirus from her. She opened up about what the trolls told the rapper on the February 12 episode of The Real.
Jeannie, 41, who was born to a Vietnamese mother and a Chinese father, got candid with her The Real cohosts ― Loni Love, Adrienne Bailon, Tamera Mowry and Amanda Seales ― about an incident where she experienced racism due to the disease outbreak.
The hosts discussed news that Chinese restaurants in New York City have been seeing a drop in business because people are afraid of the coronavirus and how people have been expressing racism against Asian-Americans because of the outbreak.
Tamera, 41, asked Jeannie if she had been experiencing racism related to coronavirus. The California native said that she had and spoke of the time she and Jeezy, 42, went to a party and received hateful and racist comments from fans on social media soon after.
"Absolutely. When Jeezy and I were in Fashion Week recently and there were pictures posted, I saw blog comments," Jeannie explained. She then revealed what some of the negative comments said. One was, "Don't catch that Corona, Jeezy" and "Oh, she got that Corona."
"And that's so hurtful because there are people that are actually dying from this. There are schools that are considering to quarantine Asian kids because they just want to keep it safe," Jeannie added. "Yes, guys. So I just want to say that we know misinformation coupled with fear leads to xenophobia."
According to the Center for Disease Control, the Coronavirus was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. "Xenophobia is a deep-rooted fear against foreigners. We just have to do better and know that when it comes to yourself, educate yourself so that you don't give life to fear," Jeannie continued.
Jeannie and the "Trap or Die" rapper stepped out together on February 7 to attend two New York Fashion Week shows. The couple saw Bvlgari and Christian Siriano’s fall and winter 2020 fashion collections. Jeezy and the stylist spent Christmas together in December and made their red carpet debut in August 2019 at the SnoBall gala. The duo were first linked in January 2019 when Khloe Kardashian's best friend Malika Haqq shared a photo of them together on Instagram.
