When you live in a city that has four seasons, you have to adapt—your wardrobe changes, your activities are modified and you have to work extra hard to keep that Seasonal Affective Disorder in check. For me, I had another thing to take care of. This summer I lost my hair-coloring virginity and got sunny, beachy highlights. But as any budding fashionista knows, you've got to update your color to adapt to the changing temps.

Enter: Sherry Ratay, salon owner & hair colorist extraordinaire. I worked with Sherry to make sure my look was updated and on-trend, but wasn't too much of a drastic change. The results were spectacular and a month later, I'm STILL getting compliments.

I sat down with Sherry to find out how she came up with my color and what she finds so sexy about autumn-inspired hues.

Sherry Ratay: Before we start to create, we have to take note of each individual as an “individual”. You cannot create the same thing on each person. I started with looking at your hair color, hair texture, skin tone, eye color, and then  your personality. What did all of these tell me? To create hair color that was slightly warmer and lighter, alongside with erasing some of the existing hair color that you already had. Your personality is friendly and confident and your hair color needed to compliment YOU.

OK!: Now take me through the creation of the look. What are the steps you took to achieve that perfect fall color?

SR: I created the look with a technique that is called “Lit From Within” and the product/hair color choice was Beth Minardi Signature shades. I alternated with two different shades, 10BB (Laguina Beach) and 6GBB (Maple), which I used to create the perfect pallet for you.

OK!: What's sexy about autumn-hued hair color?

SR: When I think about the fall, instantly I see warmth, warmth, and more warmth. It doesn’t mean that everyone needs to be a redhead! But everyone does need to have reflection, and when you incorporate warm reflect, you create reflection.

When I take a blonde into the winter shades, it can be created by incorporating soft butterscotch hues within the hairstyle. Brunettes transitions are seamless, and I choose shades like soft terra cotta, nutmeg, and warm gold’s. Redheads are always my favorite…I have such a large selection of shades to choose from! I also love to travel during the winter months—it is truly amazing to see the different shades of warmth that are created NATURALLY from the change of seasons.
