Royal Wedding Countdown: Prince William's Pre-Nup Dilemma

He’s admitted he’s nervous about walking down the aisle on April 29, but no one can seem to agree on whether Prince William should have Kate Middleton sign a pre-nup before they make it official.

OK!’S ROYAL WEDDING COUNTDOWN: NO RING FOR PRINCE WILLIAM!

According to Christopher Andersen, author of William and Kate: A Royal Love Story, a pre-nup is not only unlikely, it’s unheard of in royal circles.

“In the entire thousand-year history of the monarchy, there’s never been a pre-nup. It’s alien to the [royal family] in particular, for whom divorce was unthinkable – until, of course, the marriage of the Queen’s sister Princess Margaret ended in divorce, followed by the failed marriages of Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, and Princess Anne,” he explains.

But, the fact that three of the queen’s four children did end up divorced – not to mention the fact that one in two marriages in the UK now end in divorce – is exactly why legal experts like divorce lawyer Vikki Ziegler argue that a pre-nup is exactly what Prince William needs to put his nerves at ease.

“It is critical for Prince William to protect his assets,” she argues. “In the event of divorce, a prenuptial agreement will alleviate the need to have a public and acrimonious divorce.”
