Cody Simpson tore it up on the season premiere of Dancing with the Stars, performing the cha cha ha to Ke$ha’s “Timber” with pro dance partner Witney Carson. The couple scored a 22 out of 30, not bad for premiere week, but would Cody ever up the ante by dancing to one of his own songs?
Possibly—we’ve spoken about maybe dancing to my new single ‘Surfboard’ at some point this season,” admits the singer. “We’ll see.”
Witney explained the track has a jazz and hip hop vibe so they’ll have to see where they can work it in throughout the season.
“With the new music I’ve just been experimenting a lot and really came up with this very unique niche for the new stuff,” says Cody. “You can almost call it Beach Boys meets urban drums. It’s very interesting.”
And for all of the hubbub Dancing with the Stars tried to create around Cody’s girlfriend, Gigi Hadid, being a little protective over her man, the gorgeous model proudly sat in the audience at the premiere to cheer for him.
“It was cool,” says Cody. “I had her and my grandparents from Australia here, my whole family. It was cool to have all of my loved ones here supporting me. It was a great time. They all support me more than I could ever hope for. We had an awesome time. It’s nice to get the first week out of the way and get into the swing of things a little bit.”
Catch Cody and Witney shake things up on the next episode of Dancing with the Stars when it airs Monday at 8/7c on ABC.
