Got a love conundrum? Who doesn’t. Mayte Garcia is now in the OK! house. She is one of the stars of VH1’s reality show, Hollywood Exes, which returns this Monday, July 8, at 9. This season, she’ll be grappling with her decision to adopt a baby on her own. She once had a baby who passed away at just a week old with her ex-husband, Prince.
If the woman got Prince to put a ring on it, surely she has some sage ideas about love. For her first column, she’s answering questions about the fundamentals of dating, but starting now you can tweet your love questions to @OKMagazine with the hashtag #OKLoveMayte. Check back next week to see if she answers yours!
OK!: Is there one piece of love advice you always give?
Mayte Garcia: Really listen to your heart. Don’t listen to what other people say. You gotta go for it. A lot of people will be like, Ooh, he’s not right for you, but if you love the person that should stand the test. I mean, don’t let him be a convict in jail but realistically…
OK!: How can you tell if a guy is a player?
MG: I don’t like guys that lock their phones. If you’re dating somebody and his phone is locked and he doesn’t leave it on the table while having dinner, he’s a player. I’m sorry.
OK!: What’s your favorite flirting move?
MG: Oh gosh, I don’t really flirt. I’ll put the hair down. I’ll take the ponytail down the minute I find a guy attractive. And definitely eye contact.
OK!: What’s the best way to get over a breakup?
MG: Hang out with your girlfriends. Go out, and don’t start dating anyone else because it’s too new. You can go and get attention from other guys, but don’t commit to anybody because you’re just not there. Go shopping, get your nails done, watch a movie. Don’t stay in!
OK!: Should you ever sleep with someone on the first date?
MG: Oh hell no. No. Absolutely not. My rules are different from everyone else’s, but it takes me a lot. I’m one of those crazy ones—we’re not n a relationship until you’ve asked me, old-school style, ‘Will you be my girlfriend?’ I think women should bring that back. When you sleep with someone on the first date, you’re like, ‘Are we exclusive or not?’ It’s stressful.
OK!: Could you ever date someone who didn’t like dogs?
MG: Absolutely not. That’s a deal breaker. You don’t have to love them as much as I do, but you have to tolerate them and understand them and be open to learning about them.
OK!: Do you have any other deal breakers?
MG: Someone who’s not into family or not open to children. I broke up with Tommy Lee because he didn’t want to have more children. And we’re still friends but when it comes to a relationship? No.
