The film Blended comes to theaters this weekend, and it really sheds some light on the whole step-family thing. The movie centers around two single parents who come together at a South African’s resort’s “blended” family week, and of course a relationship between them and their kids stems from there. Here’s a few more blended families on TV who made the step-parents/half-siblings thing actually kinda cool.
The Brady Bunch made step-families cool way before the Kardashians did! The OG blended TV family consisted of Carol and her three daughters and Mike and his three sons, who married after their first marriages left them widowed.
Finn’s dad and Kurt’s mom both passed away on Glee, and so it was a happy occasion when the classmates’ parents married each other. The guys had a hard time adjusting as step-brothers at first but eventually made it work, and Kurt’s dad Burt was especially supportive to his wife, Finn’s mom, after Finn’s death in season 5.
Most often blended families refer to families that occur after divorce or widowing, but for Tia and Tamera on Sister Sister, both twins were adopted by two single parents that, in the pilot, end up all meeting and living together under the same roof. That totally counts as blended.
When Jay Pritchett married Gloria on Modern Family, he got a hot wife to show off—that came with a wise-beyond-his-years teenage son. Now Jay and Manny have a close stepson/stepdad relationship, and Jay and Gloria even gave Manny a half-brother!
After Dr. Bailey’s divorce on Grey’s Anatomy, she ends up marrying a younger intern, Ben, who thus becomes her son Tucker’s stepdad. Their family dynamic isn’t explored too much on the show, but it should be!
The characters on Gossip Girl were literally one big happy family. Serena and Chuck became step-siblings after her mom married his dad, and then, when Lily assumed her husband was dead, married Dan’s dad, Rufus, who she clearly loved all along. Oh, and Blair had a step-dad, too.
On The OC, Marissa’s mom married Seth’s grandfather, which might be the strangest marriage we’ve ever witnessed. And yes, if you’re doing the math, this meant that Marissa and Seth’s mom were step-sisters. Weird.
