'American Idol' Recap: Skylar Laine's "Wind Beneath My Wings" Steals Spotlight on '80s Night!

Last night, American Idol went back, way back, all the way to the '80s, as the top eight contestants took on the decade's hottest hits. But some of the song choices just seemed a bit too obvious. But like we say every week, so many of these singers this year are so good, it's hard to tell who will go home. Let's see how they did!
Deandre Brackensick took on DeBarge's "I Like It," and although he worked that stage and fit in perfectly with that song, he needs to stop with the hair choreography. However, Deandre definitely pulled this tune off.
Elise Testone first considered singing "Hallelujah," and boy are we glad that she changed her mind. That is such an overdone song on this show. She did much better with "I Want to Know What Love Is" by Foreigner. But this was not a song that showed off her voice like the one she did last week. She just seemed to be struggling a bit too much with the number.
Time for a duet break. Boy, does Idol know how to fill two hours. Colton Dixon and Skylar Laine took on "Islands in the Stream" by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, and they are so fun to watch. They also have really great chemistry, but after a dig by host Ryan Seacrest they made sure to clear the air: "They are just friends." Noted.
One of our faves Phillip Phillips sang "That's All" by Genesis, and Phillip continues to do what Phillip does best: his own take on the song. But week after week, it seems a bit similar. Phillip needs to take a risk soon and step out of the box. But how sweet was Phillip's brother playing with him on stage?
Another duet already? Yes, Deandre is back and he is singing "I'm So Excited" by The Pointer Sisters with Hollie Cavanagh. They are so freaking adorable together and we love love when we get to hear Hollie have fun and step away from the ballads. She needs to do more of that.
Joshua Ledet and his powerful voice took on "If You Don't Know Me By Now" by Simply Red. And just like every week, this boy can sing!

But can he get all the way to end? His voice is definitely like nothing else on the show this season.
Jessica Sanchez claims she is using her alter-ego when she sings "How Will I Know" by Whitney Houston and this kind of comes off as annoying.
But Jessica has such a powerhouse voice that just blows away, no matter what she sings. It is just her personality that can hurt her.
Another duet, this one with Phillip and Elise singing "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" by Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty. They're another duo with absolute great chemistry, and they both have that gruffness in their voices that it just really works.
Hollie Cavanagh shows up tonight with a fringe-filled dress to sing "What A Feeling" from Flashdance. It was really fun to watch and nice to see her singing upbeat, but it came off as just a bit cheesy. Worst part of all: pointing at the judges. This could hurt her.
They saved the best for last. The last duet of the night with Jessica and Joshua singing "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" by Aretha Franklin and George Michael. And yet another chemistry-filled duo. We loved it, but was it the best thing you have ever seen? Are the judges pushing for a Jessica and Joshua final two?
Another front-runner Colton Dixon takes on "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper. Colton's voice has such a unique quality to it that we just love. Colton is going to go so far, we just know it. His rendition of this song just keeps showing us how good he really is.
Skylar Laine closes out the show with "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler. And Skylar has kind of been floating under the radar lately, she was even in the bottom three last week. But not anymore! Skylar was amazing, and she showed that she is not just a fun, country girl. She can really sing!! Skylar rocked the night!
