After James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd's shocking elimination from the Dancing with the Stars finals Monday night, it seemed anything could be possible for Tuesday's big finale. But in the end fan favorites and front runners Meryl Davis and Maks Chmerkovskiy took home the mirror ball trophy in a triumphant win.

Maks had become the Susan Lucci of Dancing with the Stars of sorts, having gone 13 seasons without winning the big prize before taking a few rounds off to pursue other opportunities. But this season fans saw a different side of the dancing pro and he consistently attributed to his improved attitude to Meryl, who he touted as the best partner he has had in the history of the competition.

Amy Purdy and Derek Hough took the runner-up place while season 18's underdog Candace Cameron Bure along with pro partner Mark Ballas pulled out an impressive third place finish.
