On Aug. 27, Jennifer Aniston finished a week of talk show appearances with a trip down the red carpet for the premiere of her new film, Life of Crime. Glowing in a shimmering disco-ball silver dress, Jen, 45, captured the attention of hundreds of eager fans. But one thing stood out amid the flashbulbs and cheers: Jen’s round, protruding belly. Jen, who’s been engaged to Justin Theroux since 2012, is speculated to be in her first trimester.
“Buzz in Jen’s inner circle is that she’s nearly three months along but doesn’t want the news to come out until she knows for sure that the baby will be okay,” says a source close to the actress.
Jen’s not taking any chances—sources say she’s well aware of the risks at her age and would never tempt fate, especially after such a long road to conception if Jen is pregnant. “Jen started having fertility treatments six months into the relationship,” says an insider. “She knew the older she got, the harder it would be to get pregnant, so she had her eggs frozen. With regular attempts at in vitro fertilization, she was hoping to get lucky, but she didn’t dare think about it too much because of the chance for disappointment.
Jen’s happiness has been a source of much discussion lately. She recently went on the today show and insisted that she already feels fulfilled; she became visibly emotional as she told host Carson Daly that she’s sick of people associating her value with what she feels are society’s retro views. “It’s always such an issue: Are you married yet? Have you had babies yet?” she said. “I don’t have this sort of checklist of things that have to be done… and if they’re not checked, then I’ve failed some part of my feminism or my value as a woman because I haven’t birthed a child.”
While many people were shocked that the usually private A-lister was suddenly so forth-coming, a close inside source reveals that she did the interview “to throw people off. Jen rarely talks that in depth about her feelings and personal life. She really does not want the world to know that she could be pregnant,” says the source.
Though Jen spent the interview claiming that she isn’t waiting on motherhood to round out her life, she’s been very vocal over the years about her deep desire to have a baby. Fans have consistently speculated about when and with whom it would happen—John Mayer? Vince Vaughn?—but sources say Jen never really saw baby daddy potential with any boyfriends before Justin. “She’s wanted a baby for years,” says the source. “It was just never the right time or person.”
As Jen’s promotional duties die down, insiders say that she plans to funnel her energy into staying healthy and stress-free—which means the wedding plans are reportedly indefinitely postponed. “Jen and Justin were planning to get married the weekend of Aug. 10—the two-year anniversary of Justin’s proposal and his birthday—but Jen was getting morning sickness, and it would have been too much to get married while going through the rough early stages,” says a source.
