Who would've thought two little bluebirds could catapult Rio into the numero uno box office spot, the biggest debut so far in 2011? The voices of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Leslie Mann, George Lopez and will.i.am have soared to the top of the box office for their movie about endangered South American birds.
The number one movie in the country did 58 percent of its business in 3-D screenings, as indicated by MTV News. Although Rio made a splash with movie goers, it's cash register receipts are behind the opening of last spring's smash hit, How to Train Your Dragon.
In other news, Scream 4 arrived in the number two spot and opened with $19.2 million. Although reunited castmembers Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox joined forces with younger actors eleven years after the the last Scream flick, they fell short of the $34.7 opening of Scream 3 from 2000. Rounding out the list, Russell Brand's Hop scooted into the third spot with a $11.1 million weekend.
