'Seinfeld' Actor Bill Erwin Dies at 96

After working on stage and in film for half a century, character actor Bill Erwin, has passed away at 96.

Bill's son, Mike, told the Los Angeles Times that his father passed away of age-related causes at his home in Studio City, Calif. on Dec. 29.
Bill had a long career in movies, theater and television including roles on Gunsmoke, The Twilight Zone, Perry Mason, The Golden Girls, Growing Pains, Who's the Boss? and My Name Is Earl.
But his best guest appearance as a grumpy old man on Seinfeld earned him an Emmy nomination.

Another role that Bill is remembered for is his bellman character Arthur in the 1980 film Somewhere in Time. The actor would frequently return to the set at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Mich. to celebrate with fans.
Bill was born in Texas in 1914 and earned a bachelor's degree in journalism at the University of Texas at Austin in 1935. He studied acting at the Pasadena Playhouse and performed there beginning in 1940.
