“I’ve been invited back,” she tells me Thursday during the Breakfast at Tiffany‘s 50th Anniversary Gala event at Alice Tully Hall in NYC. “I found out today, last minute. As I was leaving, I went through my voicemail. I’m very happy. I’m ecstatic. I’m on my own, I’ve had some financial worries, and I’m taking care of a 10-year-old daughter, who’s going to be 11, so it’s been a relief. And I did work really hard last season. I tried to bring a lot to the show.”
According to reports that surfaced yesterday afternoon, Jill Zarin, Kelly Benisimon and Alex McCord were dismissed from the hit reality show.
“My voicemail was filled up today,” the divorced mom, 47, says. “I’m not sure what’s true and what’s not true at this point.”
If it is true that her co-stars have been fired, Sonja will shed no tears.
“I feel like all seven of us are stars in our own right,” she says. “We had the best season ever, the greatest ratings for New York Housewives ever, and that was without our darling Bethenny [Frankel], so I think that says a lot, because Bethenny was the star of the show, so whatever happens, everyone’s a star in their own right, and we all have amazing futures — with or without Real Housewives. I mean, Bravo and the Housewives have been a great team.”
Even without the franchise, Sonja sees the ladies succeeding.
“Oh, I have total faith in the girls. I wouldn’t doubt each of them getting a show of their own. Every girl, in their own right, is a star on that show.”
In fact, she envisions Jill becoming a Barbara Walters-style talk show host, Kelly getting a show about fashion, and Alex and hubby Simon Van Kempen doing a reality show about their lives in Brooklyn.
And despite their sometimes tempestuous behavior onscreen, she wishes them well.
”Well, that’s what the Housewives has been about for a very long time. I think the tides are turning. If you believe in astrology like I do, it’s more about sisterhood right now. Bottom of my heart is, life these days is a little too tough, as it is for everyone in a certain way, that we don’t need added drama in that department. I’m more into having a good time, celebrate today — your family, your friends, and everything that you have to be grateful for, and looking forward. Onwards and upwards.”
For Sonja, moving ahead means moving forward with her part on Real Housewives next season.
“I’m looking forward to showing people how to cook in the toaster oven, how to do it properly and easily and how to have affordable luxury in your life. From an Epsom salt bath, how to download yoga, how to get through tough times, how to restructure your business, how to move forward, how to remember what’s important in life — family and friends come first.”
And, we’ll see her dating.
“Oh yes, I’m a dating machine,” she says. “You cannot hold me back. I was dating the artist for three years, Brian Farrell, and he was wonderful. I don’t know what I would’ve done without him, but a girl moves on.”
