'Fine Actor And Lovely Man': 'All My Children' Star Ray MacDonnell Dead At 93

Emmy-winning TV legend Ray MacDonnell has sadly died at 93. The actor was most notably known for his role as Dr. Joe Martin on the ABC soap opera All My Children.

MacDonnell passed away on June 10, at his home in Chappaqua, N.Y., his daughter confirmed to Michael Fairman TV.

The veteran TV star got his big break with appearances on The Jack Benny Program, then starring as Philip Capice on the short-lived CBS soap opera Edge Of Night between 1961-1969, before landing the role of a lifetime as an original cast member on All My Children in 1970.

All My Children revolved around the intertwined relationships and shocking secrets between several families in the fictional town of Pine Valley, Pa. Susan Lucci became a household name with her portrayal of the devious, yet lovable Erica Kane.

MacDonnell stayed with the daytime stalwart for more than four decades before the series was canceled in 2011. His role as Dr. Martin earned him a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2004 Daytime Emmys.

He also starred on Broadway in the Tony-winning musical Mame, alongside Murder, She Wrote star Angela Lansbury and Ann Miller.

Fans of the beloved star took to social media to remember the daytime legend. “Rest in Peace to the greatest soap opera patriarch, Ray MacDonnell,” a user captioned a clip of AMC. While another user recalled him as “a fine actor and lovely man.”

“RIP Ray MacDonnell. I remember when my mom watched AMC and he was on,” another user wrote, reflecting on their memories watching the soap actor. “He was Tad’s dad. Condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.”

MacDonnell is survived by his wife Patricia and his three children: Daniel, Sarah and Kyle.
