Another fan shared a personal perspective on the backlash.

"These mean comments hurt my heart. As a 54-year-old woman, I look up to and admire Debbie Gibson. She looks amazing, and more importantly, she feels amazing! Why are women over 40 expected to dress like nuns, even when they are in such great shape like Debbie is?" they wrote.

Debbie Gibson shared her thoughts on fashion, beauty and embracing her natural appearance.

Gibson has long used fashion to express herself.

"My motto is, what could (go) wrong in your day if you wear glitter," Gibson told Shop TODAY.

Still, the '80s and '90s pop star acknowledged that confidence can be complicated.

"I do think there is a beauty to being real. The more we see filtered pictures and you know this look of perfection, we start to think there is something wrong with us when we look in the mirror and it can just put you in a bad mood," said Gibson.

She continued, "Not everyone is staring at what you think is an imperfection. I say you do the best with what you have and you rock what you got."

Gibson also reflected on her approach to style over the years.

"I tend to not regret anything in fashion because fashion gets taken too seriously and it's meant to be fun," she revealed.
