Donald Trump's GOP 'Crisis Meeting' Signals Midterm Panic Despite Being Billed as a Strategy Session, Says Expert

President Donald Trump’s midterm dinner with vulnerable Republicans is being billed as a strategy session, but one political strategist says the optics are part of the strategy.

Trump hosted battleground-state GOP lawmakers at the White House on September 2 as Republicans worry about holding their slim House majority and protecting a three-seat edge in the Senate. The gathering, first reported by Politico, comes as recent polling shows Democrats leading Republicans on the generic congressional ballot.

“There are real crisis meetings — most of them no one really knows about until after the election cycle,” said Christopher Lee, founder of Foresight Strategic Advisors.

“Then there are what the Trump Administration is doing here,” he added. “They ‘leak’ that they are having a crisis meeting that has a whole other set of purposes and priorities.”

“Announced ‘crisis meetings’ have three real purposes,” Lee explained. “The meeting is aimed at calming donors and showing the campaign/candidate/party are aware and managing whatever issue/problem that spawned the crisis.”

Republicans have been pressing Trump and MAGA Inc. to spend more aggressively. The super PAC reportedly has about $400 million but has spent little so far, aside from just over $800,000 on calls and texts in a South Carolina Senate runoff.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said on Fox News that Republicans are “certainly hopeful” Trump’s team and MAGA Inc. will engage in expensive races.

Lee noted the meeting also works as a visual answer to questions about Trump’s political, and literal, strength.

“They need to reassure base voters that their leader is fully functional, in command and capable of leading” the party to electoral victory, he said.

The dinner took place at the White House’s paved-over Rose Garden, which is now a patio with tables and umbrellas. Lee said the staging matters because the MAGA movement still depends heavily on Trump’s personal command.

“A movement without its leader is like a reality show without its star,” Lee said. “The cameras keep rolling, but nobody’s watching anymore.”

Cook Political Report rates 21 House seats as toss-ups, including 16 Republican-held seats. Multiple polls show Democrats have an edge on generic congressional ballots, while Democrats are gaining ground in Senate races in several Trump-won states.

“Media outlets like FOX News, Newsmax and others will proclaim breathlessly that polls are wrong, the ‘mainstream media’ is lying to you and that only Trump can lead the GOP to victory,” Lee said, noting their deep influence among the base.

“These media outlets are essential to driving turnout for GOP candidates,” he added.

“If those base voters stay home,” he predicted, “this will be the equivalent of an extinction level event for the Republican Party.”
