Donald Trump Reacts to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Moving Back to the U.K.: 'Happy About It'

Donald Trump isn't exactly hiding how he feels about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's return to the U.K.

On Wednesday, September 2, the president was asked about his “reaction” to the couple's move after spending the past several years living in Montecito, Calif.

“I’m happy about it,” Trump told the reporters while sitting at his desk at the Oval Office. “I was not a fan.”

Trump went on to talk about his relationship with the late Queen Elizabeth and his connection with King Charles, saying he had a “very good relationship” with the late monarch and has gotten to know Charles “very well” over the years.

“I’ve known him for a long time,” he said of the monarch. “He’s a great, great guy, and I thought [Harry and Meghan] treated the royal family with great disrespect.”

The 80-year-old politician also made it clear that his criticism extends beyond the couple's decision to step back from royal life.

“I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the way she acted,” he continued. “I thought she was terribly disrespectful to the Queen, to King Charles.”

Trump then offered his own take, adding, “And I don’t know, maybe I’m different; I wouldn’t have taken them back,” Trump added. “Frankly, if I were the royal family, I would not have taken them back.”

As previously reported by OK!, Harry and Meghan returned to the United Kingdom on Wednesday, August 26, traveling with their children, Archie and Lilibet.

According to Page Six, the pair chartered a private plane through Planet 9, a global private aviation company. Aviation estimates put the cost at around $12,000 per hour for the 10-hour flight.

The trip marks a notable return for the Sussexes, who have been based in California since relocating to the United States in 2020.

This isn't the first time Trump has made a pointed comment about Meghan and Harry.

During an Oval Office meeting, Trump reportedly discussed Harry's strained relationship with the royal family, according to journalist Robert Hardman.

He suggested Meghan had been "blocked out by William's wife," Kate Middleton, whom he praised as "brave" and "great.”

“William, he’ll be a good king, won’t he?” Trump said, according to Hardman. “He’s very nice. A great guy. I like him.”

When the conversation turned to Harry, Trump wondered whether the Duke of Sussex could repair his relationship with his family.

“So can Harry make a comeback?” the president allegedly asked.

After Hardman suggested that was probably unlikely, Trump responded, “Too many things, I guess. That wife of his. Boy, what she’s done to that guy.”

Hardman then pointed out that Harry and Meghan were “clearly unhappy” with the royal hierarchy.

Trump's criticism of Meghan has also continued in recent years.

In a 2025 interview with the New York Post, Trump called Meghan "terrible" and claimed Harry was being "led around by the nose.”

At the time, Trump said he wouldn't deport Harry from the U.S. because “he’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible.”

He also accused Meghan of being "very disrespectful" to the late Queen.

Trump famously called Meghan "nasty" after being told she had criticized his 2016 presidential campaign. He later clarified that he meant she was "nasty about" him rather than describing her as a nasty person.

The history between Trump and Meghan goes back nearly a decade.

In 2016, Meghan described Trump as "divisive" and "misogynistic" during a television interview.
