Meghan Markle turned 45 with balloons, kitchen dancing and a quietly familiar royal subplot.

The Duchess of Sussex shared a glimpse of her August 4 birthday on Instagram Stories, and posted a black-and-white photo of herself jumping into a pool while holding balloons. “Thank you for the birthday love,” she wrote.

The lighthearted posts came soon after Meghan and Prince Harry visited King Charles and Queen Camilla last month, a notable step after years of public strain. But the royal family did not publicly mark Meghan’s birthday, keeping the day folded into the larger question of where the Sussexes stand.

Meghan Markle shared playful birthday moments on social media.

In one Instagram Story, Meghan danced in her kitchen while the “Happy Birthday” song played and food cooked on the stove. Harry could be heard reacting from off-camera.

“Oh, dear,” he said as Meghan laughed.

She wore a white T-shirt reading “It’s Giving Mrs.,” white lounge pants and a colorful headband. Another clip captured Meghan and Harry trying to get their dogs to sit for a photo while wearing tiny party hats.

Meghan shares her August 4 birthday with Harry’s late great-grandmother, the Queen Mother Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. In Spare, Harry wrote that Charles was delighted when he realized Meghan had the same birthday as his grandmother, whom he adored.

The Public Silence

The royal family did not publicly recognize Meghan Markle’s birthday.

The royal family has not publicly wished Meghan a happy birthday since she and Harry stepped away from working royal roles in 2020 and moved to California, where they now live with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Royal commentator Tom Sykes told Page Six the lack of a public message follows palace practice.

“Birthday wishes to a private citizen would be sent privately,” Sykes said. “There’s absolutely no way anything will be put on social media feeds or anything like that.”

Royal expert Kinsey Schofield gave a similar explanation.

“The Royal Family has consistently reserved official birthday wishes for working royals, and Harry, Meghan, and their children haven’t been included in that policy for several years,” Schofield told the outlet. “Palace officials would tell you it’s protocol, not personal.”

King Charles may have privately acknowledged the occasion.

Sykes and Schofield both suggested Charles may still have marked the birthday privately. Schofield said a discreet card or gift would fit the king’s style.

“Charles has always had a compassionate streak, and despite everything that’s happened, he has rarely gone out of his way to be overtly unkind toward Meghan,” she said.

Tensions with Prince William and Kate Middleton reportedly remained unresolved.

The outlook is colder with Prince William and Kate Middleton.

“They believe Meghan played a significant role in the breakdown of family trust,” Schofield claimed, “and I think any suggestion that they’re secretly exchanging birthday wishes belongs more in the realm of wishful thinking than reality.”
