Drama, Espionage & Sex: Why Robert Hanssen Will Go Down As One Of 'The Worst Spies In American History'

Feb. 13 2021, Published 12:01 a.m. ET

Convicted spy Robert Hanssen is a contradiction... to say the least. On the surface, he was a family man, devout Catholic and career FBI agent. Secretly, though, he was a two-timer and betrayed the trust of everyone he knew.

Now, the REELZ special A Spy in the FBI will document Hanssen’s life of crime, airing Sunday, February 14.

According to REELZ, "In the final years of the Cold War, Hanssen worked his way into the FBI as a spy for the Soviets, compromising sources, plans and national secrets. While the FBI and CIA searched for the mole in their midst, his fellow agents, friends and family had no clue that he led a double life."

The Department of Justice described his espionage as "possibly the worst intelligence disaster in U.S. history." Hanssen sold thousands of classified documents to the Russians and revealed U.S. strategies in case of a nuclear war. For his crimes, Hanssen is currently serving 15 consecutive life sentences at a federal supermax prison in Colorado.

Clearly, Hanssen couldn’t hide forever... and now, a REELZ documentary reveals everything.

Featuring interviews with The Spy Next Door co-authors Elaine Shannon and Ann Blackman as well as Neil Gallagher (retired FBI assistant director), Mark Wauck (FBI special agent, ret.) and Jack Hoschouer (Hanssen’s best friend), A Spy in the FBI sits down with former FBI agents, friends and journalists who recount Hanssen’s double life and reveal what drew him to espionage and how he stayed hidden for 20 years.

"This has been a story that has had everything. It had drama, it had espionage, it had sex. If you wrote a novel about this, people would say, 'Oh no, no! That can't possibly happen,'" says Spy Next Door co-author Blackman. "We'll never know who Robert Hanssen really was. We'll never know."
