Noah Wyle has staged a huge comeback with The Pitt – but behind the acclaim, OK! can reveal the actor's resurgence has been shadowed by legal battles, resurfaced allegations and years of financial and personal strain.

Wyle, 54, first rose to prominence on E.R., where he spent 11 years alongside George Clooney before leaving the NBC medical drama in 2005.

While Clooney went on to Oscar-winning success and major studio films, Wyle's career largely stalled across independent projects and modest television roles.

His fortunes have now shifted with The Pitt, an HBO Max hospital drama he helped create, in which he plays Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch at a fictional Pittsburgh trauma center.

Following its January 2025 debut and a second season a year later, the show earned critical acclaim, with Wyle winning a Golden Globe and an Actor Award on March 1.

Yet the revival coincides with an ongoing lawsuit from the estate of E.R. creator Michael Crichton and renewed scrutiny of Wyle's past conduct on set.

An industry source said: "There is a growing recognition within the industry that his return has been impressive on the surface – the awards, the critical response, the renewed visibility – but it is happening alongside the re-emergence of old controversies and fresh complications that have not gone away. People are talking just as much about the surrounding issues as they are about the work itself. While Noah is being praised in public and positioned as a comeback success story, behind the scenes, there is a much more complicated picture. He is dealing with mounting pressure from several fronts at once – ongoing legal disputes, renewed scrutiny of his past behavior, and broader concerns about his reputation. It is not a straightforward comeback by any means, even if it appears that way from the outside."

Crichton's lawsuit, filed in August 2024 by Roadrunner JMTC, the estate of the writer, alleges The Pitt is an unauthorized derivative of E.R. and claims breach of contract and interference with rights.

Court documents assert Wyle and his collaborators attempted to revive E.R. before developing a similar concept independently.

Warner Bros. Television has denied the allegations, arguing the series is an original work and calling the claims an attack on creative freedom.

A judge has allowed the case to proceed, with an appeal filed in October.

At the same time, comments from Shabana Azeez have reignited attention on her Pitt costar Wyle's past behavior. Azeez said at a public event: "He's called me Shabeena Azeez, which is not my name."

In a separate interview, she added: "Stop letting these actors tell you 'Yes.' Noah can't save lives. He's an actor... actors cannot intubate."

The remarks prompted renewed discussion of Wyle's admission in 2019 that he had been difficult on the E.R. set.

He said: "When (Goran Višnjić) came on to the show, I had a chip on my shoulder. I had a chip on my shoulder with anybody that came on that show."

Wyle also confessed: "I've systematically gone to and apologized to everybody over the years about being the person that I was... we were really hard on people, and I was hard on people that were coming into the show like Erik Palladino or Michael Michele. Everybody had to earn their keep, in my opinion, especially poor Kellie Martin. I owe her a big apology."

Sources say the pressures of the present echo difficulties from Wyle's past.

After leaving E.R., he experienced financial hardship and depression, despite once earning around $9 million per season at the height of the show's success.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, he considered selling his Santa Ynez home and even his baseball card collection, according to interviews.

Wyle's personal life has also been marked by strain. His divorce from Tracy Warbin, filed in 2010 after 11 years of marriage, resulted in protracted financial disputes over child and spousal support.

Court filings alleged unpaid sums exceeding $700,000 across multiple years, though the matter has since been resolved.

Wyle shares two children with Warbin – Owen, 23, and Auden, 20 – and has a daughter, Frances, 10, with his second wife, Sara Wells, whom he married in 2014.

Actress Gina Gershon, 63, who was rumored to have dated Wyle, declined to discuss past relationships.

She said: "I don't speak about any of my affairs or boyfriends from the past."

The actress added that she "couldn't be happier for all of (Wyle's) success" with The Pitt, describing it as "well deserved" and insisting he was a "great guy."
