Krystal, 32, and Chris, 32, released a joint statement to Bachelor Nation that read, “It hurts to announce that at this moment, we have mutually decided to separate. Never did we imagine this scenario, but we’ve come to a point where we both need to work on ourselves.”
The statement continued, “We are best friends that love and care for each other so deeply. We’ve appreciated everyone’s love and support so far throughout our journey and we just ask that your please respect our privacy as we navigate through this.”
The breakup comes just a week after Krystal called the show’s environment “toxic.” The reality star told Us Weekly, “It’s so crazy watching The Bachelor because it feels like such a toxic environment, they’re in. Honestly, I just think it’s really scary …Seeing all this stuff come up for all the contestants now, like, blasts from the past means anything could be exposed on this show now, especially with how they are leaking everyone earlier.”
The former couple met, got engaged, and tied the knot on the reality show. Chris, a sales trainer, proposed to Krystal, a fitness coach, during the September 2018 finale. “You’ve helped me become a better version of myself,” Chris told Krystal during the proposal.
He continued, “But I have to be honest with myself and I have to be honest with you. And I’m so sorry, Krystal, but it would be unfair to the both of us if I left here today holding your hand because I want to leave here holding your heart, and I want to give you my heart today, tomorrow and forever.”
At the time, Chris, 48, told People, “We are so excited to start this new chapter of our lives together.” He added, “We will have each other’s backs forever.”
