Fifty Shades of Grey has finally hit theaters, and the film is already sparking some colorful commentary from fans. But there is more behind the movie than you may know, and we’ve gathered just a few interesting facts about the highly-anticipated project!
According to magazine reports, to prepare for his role as Christian Grey, Jamie Dornan visited a London sex dungeon to try better understand the mindset of his character.
Dornan also recently joked that he had no worries about viewers seeing his man parts because there were contracts set up to block that from happening.
The film is banned in Malaysia due to it failing to pass the Malaysia’s Film Censorship Board. It was deemed “pornography” by the board. It also ruled that the film’s S&M scenes involving Grey and his romantic interest Anastasia Steele were “not of natural sexual content.”
Reality TV star Kim Kardashian held a private, all-girls screening of the film on Feb. 3, tweeting “OMG it’s sooooo good!” while watching the film.

Victoria Beckham also fell victim to the allure of the book, going as far as purchasing her mother a copy after she read the first novel in the series.
All things weren’t drama free between the movie’s director and the book’s author either! Taylor-Johnson shared that she and E.L. James would often get into arguments about the project. She added that they were “creative fights” but still very difficult.
John Mayer admitted that he used a line from the book to attempt to woo a lady who caught his interest. “I said, ‘I’m going to sing it to you’” he revealed back in 2012. But he added that the line only caused the woman to break out in hysterical laughter.
The film’s trailer also sparked a few trends of it’s own! In the six months following the release of the trailer in July 2014, eBay shopping data revealed that many of Christian and Ana’s favorite brands and items saw increases in sales. For instance, sales of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervills -- which is mentioned several times in the book -- increased 33 percent compared to the same time period the year before.

Singer Rita Ora, who plays the role of Grey’s sister Mia, had a lot of work to do for her part in the movie. She revealed that she took up French and had to perfect an American accent in order to hide her British one. She also said she had to learn to tap into her character and try "just not being me.”
And in an unexpected twist for the singer, Ora was initially just interested in participating in the film’s soundtrack. However, once the team met her, they ultimately decided to cast her in the film.
Though the books are based in Seattle, Washington, filming for the movie actually started in Vancouver, Canada, back in 2013.
