Kevin Smith's Doctor Says Smoking Weed May Have Saved His Life

Kevin Smith was close to death after suffering a massive heart attack in February, but it turns out a joint he'd smoked hours earlier may have saved his life! The writer-director told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show that his weed habit is the reason he's still here.
"They got me to the hospital and they wheel me into the emergency room and the whole time I’m chill. Like, the guy said, the paramedic, he goes, 'You’re being real calm, that’s going to get you through this,'" Kevin told Stephen. "And there’s a dude behind him goes, ‘That’s what’s going to save his life.’ And I’m like, ‘What does that part mean?'"
Turns out, Kevin was so chill because he'd smoked a joint just before his stand-up special. He suffered the heart attack right after his show.
"I said, 'Doc, honestly, I just smoked too much weed this morning. That’s what this is,'" Kevin continued. "I honestly thought I was too high. I’d smoked a bunch of weed that day because I was doing the show and then I smoked a joint right before the show and then I got off stage and all of the sudden I had a heart attack."

Not only was the weed not the cause of Kevin's health problems, but it was part of the solution. "He goes, ‘No, quite the opposite. That weed saved your life.’ And I was like, ‘Do tell! Like, what do you mean?’” the Clerks star joked. "He said, ‘You kept calm. They told you that you were having a massive heart attack, and you remained calm the whole time, so that joint saved your life.'"
Shortly after his health scare, Kevin teared up in a Facebook live video while reflecting on the near-fatal incident. "I remember reading kind things from people who normally don't say kind things about me or my career," he said, "and I was like, 'This is what it's going to be like when I die one day, hopefully. People will say nice things.'"
