“Nick has led a very troubled life,” a source told OK! magazine. “His parents didn’t set a good example. He witnessed them getting drunk and fighting throughout most of his childhood."

Nick followed the same fate as his “extremely dysfunctional” family. The 35-year-old wrote in his 2013 autobiography “Facing the Music and Living to Talk About It,” “I began drinking heavily in my teens and then moved on to drugs at 18 or 19, starting with marijuana and moving up to cocaine, Ecstasy and prescription painkillers, among other substances.”

When Nick was diagnosed with a weakening of the heart muscle in 2008, he had no choice but to clean up his act. “The odds were stacked against him,” the insider said. “But he’s very proud of the positive place he’s in now.”
