Sarah Palin was caught off guard when she claimed she found out Todd was planning a divorce in an email from his attorney. During an interview released on November 12 with James Dobson, the founder of the Family Talk Christian ministry, the former Alaska governor spoke about the shocking news, and how she wanted to keep her family together at the time. The Family Talk Christian ministry noted that the interview had been conducted previously.
Sarah, 55, said she received the email detailing his divorce plans from his attorney on June 19, almost three months before Todd filed for divorce in September. She said she was devastated when he eventually did file after their 31st wedding anniversary. “I thought I got shot,” she confessed.
At the time, Sarah claimed that the former couple was going through counseling and did not believe that their marriage was not “over, over.” “In a general sense, marriage is so extremely important as a foundation of our nation,” the mother of five said. “It helps make America that much greater, is that security of family, and I'm not to the point of wanting mine to be split."
Todd filed for divorce from Sarah on September 6. He listed the reason to divorce as “incompatibility of temperament between the parties such that they find it impossible to live together as husband and wife.”

The oil field production operator and former Alaska governor celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary on August 29, and began dating in high school. Todd and Sarah denied divorce rumors for nearly a decade before Todd actually filed. Sarah issued several statements slamming the rumors that swirled in 2009, as reports claimed the couple was splitting up.
In 2009, multiple reports alleged that the former couple were headed to divorce, were cheating on one another, and that the former Alaskan governor was going to move herself and their children to Montana. “No divorce. No affairs. No land in Montana. Nothing!” a representative for the couple told People at the time. “All lies and fabrications!”
Sarah and Todd share five children together, Bristol, Track, Willow, Piper, and Trig who is their only underage child. According to the divorce filing, Todd requested joint legal custody of their minor son.
