Having played her in the film Cadillac Records, Beyoncé wrote a special blog post today in honor of Etta James. The R&B legend passed away on Friday morning at the age of 73 due to leukemia.
Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z have been celebrating the recent birth of their first child together, Blue Ivy Carter. The singer has been staying out of the spotlight, but today she wrote a new blog in light of the news of Etta's death.
"This is a huge loss," she wrote. "Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time. I am so fortunate to have met such a queen. Her musical contributions will last a lifetime."
"Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist," Beyoncé continued referencing her film. "When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear her pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter. She was fearless, and had guts. She will be missed."
The "At Last" singer's longtime manager, Lupe De Leon, confirmed her death today in a statement.
"This is a tremendous loss for the family, her friends and fans around the world," Lupe said. "She was a true original who could sing it all — her music defied category. I worked with Etta for over 30 years. She was my friend and I will miss her always."
