Movie juggernaut Avatar and Iraq war drama The Hurt Locker, directed respectively by divorced couple James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow, dominate the 82nd Academy Awards with nine nominations apiece, going head-to-head for best director and best picture Oscars.

Heartbreaking indie movie, Precious, comes in with six nominations and the movie's star, acting newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, is pitted against Julie & Julia lead Meryl Streep for the title of Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Up in the Air also scored six nominations including best director, best picture, best actor, and two best supporting actress Oscars for Vera Farmiga and Twilight actress Anna Kendrick.

ANNE AT THE NOMINATIONS:

Meanwhile, Precious actress Mo'Nique — who refused to campaign for any acting awards — is up against Penélope Cruz for Nine and Maggie Gyllenhaal for her role in Crazy Heart, in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category.

HOW DID ANNE HATHAWAY GET INVOLVED WITH THE OSCAR NOMINATIONS?

Two Oscar newbies A Single Man's Colin Firth, and The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner, are nominated for best actor awards along with previous Oscar-winners Morgan Freeman and George Clooney. Jeff Bridges is celebrating his first leading actor nomination since 1985's Starman.

For the second year since his death, a movie of Heath Ledger's has also scored a nomination.

Last year he won a posthumous best actor award for the role of The Joker in The Dark Knight, and this year his final movie, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, has been nominated for best art direction and costume design.
