Beyoncé debuted her hotly-anticipated music video for “Run the World (Girls)” — off her latest album 4 — last night on American Idol. The 29-year-old superstar served as mentor to the Top three on this week’s episode of the hit Fox singing competition.
Beyoncé certainly brought out a different side of herself in the 4:51-long clip, complete with a number of exotic wardrobe changes, hot dance sequences and two hyenas on chain leashes that the singer commands.
The setting? A tribal world where women rule in a post-apocalypse universe.
A theme of female empowerment runs throughout the video, a common subject choice for the singer.
Around the two-minute mark, Beyoncé flips off the cameras and shows she means business.
“I also found a lot of inspiration in ’90s R&B; Earth, Wind & Fire; DeBarge; Lionel Richie; Teena Marie,” the superstar told Billboard, via Huffington Post, recently of the inspiration behind 4. “I listened to a lot of Jackson 5 and New Edition, but also Adele, Florence + the Machine, and Prince. Add in my hip-hop influences, and you can hear how broad it is. I also gave myself more freedom to really belt out some songs, and bring soul singing back.”
