Julianne Hough is SHAPE’s December covergirl, and inside the pages of the premiere fitness publication, the Dancing with the Stars beauty shares some of her personal tips to better health.
The 26-year-old Rock of Ages star said one of her keys to a productive day is to "get at least 8 hours” of sleep, regardless of the circumstances.
“Recently I’ve started forcing myself to go to bed earlier, because if I don’t get enough sleep, I’m miserable,” the Salt Lake City native revealed. "I get cloudy, my eyes hurt, and I have to take a nap.
"But when I’m well-rested, I am rockin'!"

Julianne, who's the youngest of five siblings, said that beginning her day with proper nutrition is another key to her productivity.
“I love making my own breakfast,” the Footloose star said, adding her "favorite dish is an egg-white omelet or a scramble with veggies like asparagus, mushrooms, spinach, and kale."

Hough cited protein as something that "carries me all the way through” a busy day.
The Safe Haven beauty, who’s carved out a career as a dancer, singer and actress, said that “morning is her favorite time to exercise,” albeit through a session with her trainer or a group class.

She said she likes "to shock her body by doing different things,” as a bit of variation can make all the difference.
"When I was on tour, even though I was dancing two hours a night, I felt I needed more, so I started doing dance moves with ankle or wrist weights on,” she said. "Pretty soon, the other girls joined in, and I ended up teaching classes to everyone.
"It motivated me to not slack off and to do 30 reps instead of just 20."
