Hugh Laurie Defends Sophie Cunningham's Stance on Transgender Athletes: 'I Don't Believe Men Should Compete Against Women'

Actor Hugh Laurie has publicly defended Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham’s stance on transgender athletes, explicitly stating that he does not believe biological men should compete in women's sports.

The House star voiced his support following a viral exchange on X with comedy writer Graham Linehan.

After Linehan called Laurie’s initial thoughts on basketball demographics "cowardly," Laurie responded directly: “I don’t believe men should compete against women.”

Challenged further by Linehan to address the WNBA player specifically, Laurie confirmed, “And yes, I support Sophie Cunningham.”

The controversy began with an ESPN profile published in July, where Cunningham stated she wanted to "protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men.”

The 29-year-old was dubbed “MAGA Barbie” shortly after her viral comments, which she defended, saying her opinions come from a place of "truth" and "common sense" rather than hatred toward the transgender community. She noted that she considers herself politically "in the middle.”

The WNBA has said there are no immediate eligibility issues affecting the league, as current policies restrict rosters to players who are women but lack explicit parameters regarding transgender athletes.

On August 9, the British actor posted an observation about the extreme height distributions required for professional basketball. Linehan interpreted this as evasive and prompted the actor to declare an explicit side.

Laurie, 67, shut down the criticism by clearly opposing trans inclusion in female categories.

Linehan later deleted his critical post, apologized to Laurie for his "knee-jerkiness," and credited Laurie's earlier work on A Bit of Fry & Laurie as a career inspiration.

Laurie has weighed in on American politics before, primarily targeting President Donald Trump through satirical comments, most notably during a viral acceptance speech at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards.

While he rarely addresses Trump in serious, direct political statements, the British actor has consistently used his comedic background to mock the former president's wealth, policies and base.

While accepting his award for The Night Manager, Laurie, who lives in London with his wife Jo Green, and has three children including a 34-year-old daughter, joked that he was glad to win at "the last-ever Golden Globes," explaining, "I don't mean to be gloomy, it's just that it has the words 'Hollywood,' 'Foreign,' and 'Press' in the title"— taking a direct swipe at Trump's well-known anti-media rhetoric and isolationist stances.

In the same speech, Laurie, who recently joined the BBC’s espionage series Legacy of Spies, added that to some Republicans, even the word "Association" in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association felt "sketchy."

He concluded by stating he was accepting the trophy "on behalf of psychopathic billionaires everywhere.”

Laurie’s fellow Brit, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, shares the same views as him on women in sports.

While the Harry Potter author has not addressed Laurie’s recent online exchange with Linehan, she and Laurie are notably aligned on the matter.

Rowling has been highly active in the very same discourse, having independently and forcefully voiced her own support for Cunningham weeks prior.

In July, Rowling praised Cunningham's original remarks about keeping biological men out of women's sports, writing that "Sophie Cunningham is standing up for women and girls everywhere and it’s glorious.”
