Jaclyn Smith Reveals Cocaine Had a 'Constant Presence' on Set by Final Season of 'Charlie's Angels'

Jaclyn Smith is pulling back the curtain on what really happened behind the scenes of Charlie's Angels.

The 80-year-old, who starred as Kelly Garrett throughout all five seasons of the hit series, revealed cocaine became a "constant presence" on set by the show's final season — prompting her to increasingly retreat to her motor home.

Smith opened up about the darker side of Charlie's Angels in her new memoir, I Once Knew a Guy Named Charlie, released Tuesday, September 8.

By the fifth and final season, Smith recalled seeing more and more drug use behind the scenes.

"The more drug use I saw, the more time I spent in my motor home," she wrote in the book. "I was in there a lot by the end of the series."

Smith did not name any specific cast or crew members who used cocaine.

While drugs may have been around her, Smith made it clear she didn't participate.

The TV icon insisted she has "never" used cocaine and "never will," explaining that witnessing its impact on others was enough to keep her away from it.

"I've watched that drug, in particular, turn people into the worst version of themselves," she penned.

Smith already knew the fifth season would be her last, and Charlie's Angels ultimately ended its five-season run in 1981.

Drug use wasn't the only surprising behind-the-scenes revelation Smith shared.

She also recalled an encounter with late costar Tanya Roberts, who joined the series as Julie Rogers for its final season. According to Smith, Roberts had an open marriage with husband Barry Roberts and was candid about their arrangement.

While the cast was flying to Hawaii for filming, Smith claimed Tanya asked if she wanted to join the couple for a threesome. Smith declined the invitation but said she admired Roberts' willingness to be open about her sexuality, calling it "brave and self-aware."

Smith was the only member of the original trio to remain a series regular for all five seasons.

When Charlie's Angels premiered in 1976, she starred alongside Farrah Fawcett as Jill Munroe and Kate Jackson as Sabrina Duncan. Fawcett left after the first season and was replaced by Cheryl Ladd, while Jackson departed after Season 3. Shelley Hack took her place before Roberts joined for the fifth season.

Smith admitted the changing lineup affected the dynamic on set, particularly after Fawcett's departure.

"Kate had a hard time with Farrah gone," she told People. "No one could replace her."

Despite the turmoil surrounding the show, Smith pushed back against the long-running narrative that she, Fawcett and Jackson were constantly competing with one another.

In her memoir, Smith recalled the three women leaning on each other as they dealt with overnight fame, relentless media attention and even frightening encounters with stalkers. She said rumors that the women were jealous or fought over screen time weren't true.

Smith remained close to her original costars long after their time together on Charlie's Angels ended.

"After the applause, the friendship is still there," she said. "That sisterhood was strong."

The revelations come as Charlie's Angels prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its September 1976 premiere later this month.
