The tragic circumstances of John’s passing on set in 2003 remain fresh in the minds of many.
While rehearsing for 8 Simple Rules, John experienced heart attack-like symptoms. He was rushed to a hospital and diagnosed with an aortic dissection, which is defined by the Mayo Clinic as a tear in the inner layer of the aorta.
After undergoing surgery, he was pronounced dead at 54.

John Ritter died in 2003 after suffering an aortic dissection while rehearsing for ‘8 Simple Rules,’ leading the series to write his character out of the show.
Following John’s death, the cast took a brief hiatus from filming Season 2.
Ultimately, ABC executives and producers decided to write off John’s character, Paul Hennessy.
The emotional “Goodbye” episode aired later that year, showing Paul’s wife, Cate (Katey Sagal), receiving a call about his sudden collapse at a grocery store, leaving the family to cope with their loss.

Jason Ritter said the cast's shared grief created a lifelong bond, explaining that many of them felt like they had all lost the same father.
