Vice President J.D. Vance recently provided insights into the command structure of President Donald Trump during a critical military operation.
Speaking from Air Force Two as he traveled to Milan, Italy, for the Winter Olympics, Vance addressed speculation surrounding his presence during the mission that led to the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

J.D. Vance explained his role in a major operation.
Vance revealed he was situated in a mobile Situation Room approximately 20 miles from the operation's location. He explained that this strategic positioning allowed him to remain engaged while maintaining operational security.
“I was on the phone with the president and the entire team for about six hours for the entire course of that operation,” he stated, countering claims that he was disconnected from the decision-making process.

The vice president said he stayed connected to Donald Trump remotely.
The vice president received notification late on January 2 regarding the imminent mission. He noted that traveling to Mar-a-Lago at that time, accompanied by a large Secret Service detail, could have raised alarms.
“We decided it made sense for me to watch it remotely and ensure that we preserved operational security,” he explained.

The operation, which unfolded in the early hours of January 3 in Caracas, resulted in the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
Images from Mar-a-Lago depicted Trump with key officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Vance’s absence from these photos led to speculation regarding his role and involvement.

J.D. Vance emphasized the importance of secrecy.
In response to this speculation, Vance emphasized the importance of secrecy during the operation.
“One of the critical reasons that mission was ultimately successful is because no one found out about it,” he noted, underscoring that effective communication was more crucial than physical proximity to the president.
He also highlighted the trust established between himself and Trump, revealing that his role and location were coordinated with the president’s inner circle.
Vance articulated the chain of command, explaining that decisions were executed through a defined hierarchy with Trump at the helm.
