Joe, 83, was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in May 2025, months after he left the White House earlier that year.

Prostate cancer may not cause symptoms at first. As the disease continues, problems with urination can develop, including waking up more times to use the restroom at night, according to Mayo Clinic.

Jill Biden said Joe Biden wasn't diagnosed with cancer until leaving the White House in January 2025.

The former first lady recalled informing the team of doctors in the White House about her concerns surrounding her husband's health, telling host Kelly Ripa that she thought the issue was "addressed."

"They were following the American Urological Association guidelines. And so they didn’t give him the PSA test, the blood test. But when it continued when we got out of the White House, I said, 'Joe, we’ve got to go up to Jeff in Philly — something’s wrong,'" she recounted. "And so we did. But I never, oh my God, I never thought it would be prostate cancer."

Jill Biden explained that Joe Biden's cancer 'metastasized to his bones.'

Prostate cancer typically is curable, though if symptoms remain unchecked, it can spread to other parts of the body, which is what happened to the former president..

"You can be cured, and you’ll be fine. Unfortunately for Joe, it metastasized to his bones," Jill said. "Which means that he will forever live with cancer, and we have to be mindful of it every three months, testing and medicines. And anybody who’s gone through this cancer journey — and I’ve been through it many times with members of my family, of course with Beau — it’s constant."

Beau Biden, her husband's son from a previous relationship, died in 2015 from a rare form of brain cancer.

Kelly Ripa explained doctors normally don't test men over 70 years old for prostate cancer.

The Live With Kelly and Mark host, 55, defended Jill against accusations that she knew about her husband's condition but "covered it up" during his presidency. The talk show host said her father was diagnosed with the same disease as Joe after experiencing similar symptoms.

"When people were like, ‘There’s no way you can’t know,’ oh, yes, there is," Kelly said. "Because they don’t test men over 70 years old for prostate cancer. So it can be living there for all of those years, growing slowly, and eventually metastasize."
