John Oliver Rips Apart Sean Duffy's 'Weird' Reality Travel Series: 'God-Awful Production'

John Oliver slammed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy over his "expensively produced" and "weird" YouTube reality series, The Great American Road Trip.

Oliver highlighted what he described as a "god-awful" production that suffered from massive delays and low viewership.

“It turns out it’s basically just an expensively produced test run of a Duffy family reality show, with each episode featuring a bare minimum about travel or America, but a ton of manufactured reality TV drama around the Duffys doing stuff like planning a family party,” the HBO host said on the Sunday, August 23, episode of Last Week Tonight, along with a clip of Duffy trying to dissuade his 18-year-old daughter from wanting to attend Harvard.

Co-hosted with his wife, Fox & Friends host Rachel Campos-Duffy, the series was marketed as a "nationwide storytelling movement" but was widely mocked by Oliver for its bizarre pacing.

The series faced extensive production delays and was ultimately "dumped" onto YouTube, where it failed to gather a substantial audience.

Oliver used the reality show to critique Duffy's transition from a 1990s MTV reality star to a Trump cabinet official, framing it as a vanity project.

“Before I talk about the show, a bit of context about why Duffy might have thought this was a good idea, because he has long loved being on camera,” said Oliver. “He was actually on The Real World: Boston back in the late ’90s, where he presented himself as deeply h----. In his audition, he reportedly said he wanted to be on the show because of his interest in cute girls.”

Oliver continued to mock the inexperienced transportation secretary, saying, “Anyway, Duffy eventually ran for Congress, where he served four terms, then became a TV pundit and co-host of a right-wing podcast with his wife, featuring episodes like ‘Is Wokeism the United States’ Cultural Revolution?’ and ‘Why Taylor Swift Is the Sign of a Declining Society.’”

Critics have strongly rebuked Duffy for a tumultuous first year in office, marked by a significant uptick in aviation safety failures, including a midair collision over Washington, D.C., on January 29, 2025, as well as major flight delays.

“Then last year, he joined the Trump administration as transportation secretary, bringing all his culture-war energy to that job, including after a deadly plane crash outside D.C., absurdly suggesting DEI had played a role, saying, ‘You can’t focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion when you try to hire air traffic controllers,’” Oliver snarked. “And yet somehow, with all his responsibilities, Duffy still managed to find time to film The Great American Road Trip.”

Oliver had a field day with Duffy’s widely mocked insistence that his reality show was a celebration of America’s 250th birthday. “Don’t you want to celebrate America?” he asked Congress.

Oliver snapped, “You sound like a f------ child! You do get that just because it’s America’s birthday doesn’t mean you get to do an ethics violation, right? Grow up, Sean!”
