Reese Witherspoon Has A 'Big Issue' With The 'Legally Blonde 3' Script: Film Expected In 2022, But 'Nobody Is Holding Their Breath'
Fans can’t wait to see Reese Witherspoon back on the big screen in Legally Blonde 3, but a source says her perfectionism is putting the sequel seriously behind schedule.
“Reese’s big issue is the script,” spills the source, who says the Big Little Lies alum has been riding hard on the writers, including The Office’s Mindy Kaling. “Reese wants it to be funny and fresh, but it also has to feel relevant and address the issues that women are facing today,” details the source. “That’s a tall order.”
Since the movie got the green light back in 2018, “they’ve gone through a bunch of writers and still aren’t close to finalizing anything,” the source adds.
“The delays have nothing to do with Reese’s schedule", a source says of the star reprising her role as Elle Woods. "She’s eager to do it."
And with the Hollywood powerhouse recently selling her Hello Sunshine media company (for a whopping $900 million!), “she’ll have even more time to fuss over the script,” the source adds. “They’re saying the movie will come out next year, but it’s already been pushed back once. Nobody is holding their breath!”

The film was scheduled for this February; however, those plans were quickly derailed even before the novel pandemic could worsen the project's timeline.
While a director for Legally Blonde 3 has not been named, and the plot remains under wraps, Marc Platt — who produced the first two movies — will reportedly be returning for the latest film.
Witherspoon previously celebrated the franchise's success on the twentieth anniversary of the first movie. The 45-year-old took to Instagram to share throwback photos of herself as the beloved sorority-girl-turned-lawyer accompanied with a nostalgic caption that read "Omigod you guys ….#LegallyBlonde premiered 20 years ago TODAY! Time flies when you're busy using legal jargon in your every day life."
"😆 But truly... playing Elle Woods was the role of a life time and I'm so honored to have been a part of sharing her story with you all. Every meme, graduation cap, musical number, halloween costume and bend & snap has brought me so much JOY over these past two decades! 💕 I wonder... what will Elle do next?" the Hollywood veteran teased.
